C2 1965 Antique Auto Battery Question....

Just read a comment about a maintenance free battery made by ANTIQUE AUTO BATTERY. The price for this battery is $230. I called the folks at AAB, and they are sure that their battery will pass NCRS judging. But before I spend that kind of money, I would appreciate some opinions/experiences from the Discussion Board group. And also, if their battery will not pass judging, what is the estimated point penality?

    Thanks,

They describe their battery as having a "poly tar top". I wonder if it looks like the origingal "tar top" battery?

the repo ones i've seen are a hard plastic top and i believe it is called polytar but it's nothing of the consistency of the tops of the originals. the originals were coated with a roofing tar consistency material.when we judged at the fla regional last month , a creative owner applied a thin film of roofing tar to the repo's hard plastic top. got caught and took a minor deduction. should have used a thicker coat of roofing tar.mike

I thought that parts were judged on their appearance. Was there a thin spot in the tar coating or did this creative owner truly get gouged by a judge?

I recently put one of these batteries in my 1957 Oldsmobile and my 66 corvette. I would not trade it for anything else. The battereys are lighter. There is no need for a tender as they hold a charge. There is not the horror of a battery blowing up and spewing acid every where. This usualy happens on the way to ameet to be judged. There will be a point deduct for the plastic top because it does not have garboones sticking to it, however you could have a deduct for the garboones on a real tar top. The unit for the corvette was $260 including a date code. An acid incident could easily cost $500. I recomend these batterys and theylook great, dreded point deduct and all

              Hey Jim,

              What's a "garboone"...........is it sorta like a "booger"??
