    C-1 Serial Number Plate

The serial number plate on my 1960 Corvette came off during restoration. It appeared to be riveted.

How does one reattach the plate? Would epoxy be a no no?

    Bob,

That would definetely be a No-No since it was originally rivited.

Bob, The answer depends on the serial number. I quote from the Judging Manual "VIN serial plate for '58 through early '60 cars is attached with phillips head screws to the left-hand door pillar, just below the upper hinge. Sometime in early '60, VIN plate location changed to being spotwelded to steering column mast jacket, about 13 inches rearward of the steering gear housing". Hope this helps. Best regards from Connecticut, Mark.

Bob, Mark is correct. By what you say I am quessing that the VIN plate is on the steering column. I believe the plate to be stainless and a friend has a 61 with a 57 column in it, who wants to put a 61 column back in his car. He has done alot of experimenting trying to weld stainless to the column. So far the results are not very promising. He must have a new plate made so his problem is money if the weld is not right. Your problem is that you have the ORIGINAL plate and you certainly do NOT want to destroy it. I would opt for some kind of expoxy so that you can place it in the original position and if done right nobody will know the difference, except, of course, those reading this thread. BTW Mark, I'm from Canton, Ct. In what town do you live?

          Hi Rob:

I'm curious about where this new vin plate will be made and how much it costs. Can you help me there? As far as attaching it is concerned, try some glue from the folks with a better idea, FORD. Their gasket and weatherstrip cement will absolutely stick and hold. In fact when you put a gasket on, if this stuff is tacky, you better get it right the first time!

Let me know about the vin tag guy.

          Thanks,

          Dale.

My '60 serial #2151 has the plate on the steering shaft. It is riveted! Your original mounting holes should still be there. The difficulty with a proper restoration is that the rivit head appears to be finished from the outside. So if you're using a "pop" type rivit it would have to done from the inside to appear original. Maybe go threw the column (providing the shaft is not there) and then repair the access holes after the installation is complete. I hope this helps.

Something ain't right! that plate on the steering column should be spot welded on both ends. NO RIVETS.
