Ok, I have verified my engine pad with a few experts some recomended from this board. I have also done more reading and research on my own, not to mention I have had the stamping examined and it has been confirmed to be authentic.
So, it appears that the numbers 1 and 8 either slipped through inspections or
since they didn't alter the number, they were let slide when they occured. It also appears the dies were made incorrectly where this occured.
This is on my 67 BB Engine.
So just an FYI, this is what I have found. I guess it's not common but common enough that it has been investigated and confirmed to have happened before.
