    67 engine id #

I recently purchased a numbers matching 67 coupe, The numbers look good, however it is a 435 aluminum head tri power and the engine is stamped with JE, not JH. Is this possible?, or did this car not have Aluminum heads? Could anyone help me or point me in the right direction. Thanks Bob

Bob -- It really should have either JH, with K19, or IU without. By numbers match, do you mean you have checked the casting # of the heads, by removing the valve cover (# 3904392) and casting date (you'd have to remove the intake and check the head's intake runners with a mirror), as the L89 option was not released until mid-March '67, so your car should have a VIN greater than (say) 16000. Conversely, of course, the head dates could not follow the engine assy. date.

Bob, The L89 (designator JH) used the aluminum heads in 1967 and there were only 16 of those cars delivered in 1967. I know these cars fetch big 6 digit prices when and if they are ever sold. Therefore there is a good chance that someone installed a set of aluminum heads on your car. Have you checked to see if they are GM heads or aftermarket heads? It shouldn't be too hard to find a good set of iron heads if originality is what you are after.

If you have the "corvette black book" please look up the 1967 corvette section. You'll see as previously mentioned that only 16 L-89 corvettes were produced on the basic L-71 block. My block reads "JE", which is the suffix for 427/435hp. they produced 3754 of these L-71 engines. My heads are #3904391. Cast iron early production. If you look at the "corvette black book" the suffix "AH" is next to "AR". "AH"= aluminum head,"AR"= air injection reactor. If you have the time look at the back side of your engine block on the drivers side casting numbers, mine ends with 351 due to it being an early production block. Also check the side of the block by the dip stick just above the pan for some letters/numbers. My block was an August block=H,5=day,6=1966,reads H 5 6. If you don't have any reference books I would get some. I'm sure more members will advise you with more input. Good luck,GRR#33570

Bob, one more thing I forgot to mention to check on your aluminum heads. Look at the exhaust ports next to the header for a winters foundry snowflake logo. GM also puts them on intake manifolds also. That will at least tell you the heads are GM. Good luck. GRR.#33570
