9 leaf rear spring

Concerning a quality rear spring it seems the Eaton 9 leaf gets the nod, even if it isn't an exact copy of the original GM spring. For those who might have purchased the Eaton spring, did it perform up to expectation? .. Along with the Eaton I'm also considering purchasing a stock, used, 9 leaf spring and rebuilding it with new liners, etc., for my '64. . .

Are there other year used original GM 9 leaf rear springs that look the same as the '64 spring? ..

On a 1966 427/425, I just replaced an incorrect 9 leaf spring with a 7 leaf from Eaton. The ride and height are excellent.

The exact same 9-leaf spring was used from 1964 thru 1974; same GM produciton part number, same specs.

Your comment about the 7 leaf rear spring caught my attention. In my case what I had thought to be the standard spring in my own car turned out to be a 7 leaf spring. Only recently did I discover this was the case. After all these years I had thought the standard spring was in place! The ride, height, etc., were always decent, too, with that 7 leaf spring. I'm on the fence as to whether or not I will rebuild the 7 leaf spring or go with the 9 leaf. Thanks for your reply.

I had thought the '64 style spring had a run of years that it was in use, but I couldn't remember the time frame. Thanks for the reminder ..

I was under the impression that Eaton built the springs for GM.

The Eaton Corporation was an original Corvette spring supplier, but there is no connection at all between that company and Mike Eaton's Eaton Detroit Spring, which is an independent family-owned full-service spring shop; same name, no relation

I have an Eaton reproduction 9-leaf spring on my '67, and I'm very pleased with it. The rear of the car sat about 3/4" high at first, but after about 100 miles, it settled to dead on the money for ride height. I had them leave it unassembled and unpainted and finished it myself with paint and liners from Quanta.

Just receved my nine leaf rear spring to day. It came assembeled and I have to take it apart. Those spring holders are they under preasure or are they just for shipping?

I installed an Eaton replacement spring in my 63 project over the winter. The 63 project is not complete, but everything seems fine with the spring. If you are taking the spring (Eaton) apart to paint and install liners, compress the spring using two 8" C-clamps prior to removing the center bolt and use the same process when re-assembling except for a few pieces of leather to prevent the clamps from damaging the paint.

Spring holders are for shipping only and should be removed. They are not under pressure.
