    Re-Plate or Not To Re-Plate

Has anyone else had this dilema. Do I have my original 1967 pitted pot metal parts such as door handles, tail lights, parking lights etc. replated or do I buy reproduction or NOS parts if I can find it. What is the best route in terms of quality chrome and cost effective. I have heard that not many platers can not or will do pot metal parts. I would like to hear your views. Thanks, Scott

Hey Scott, I know what you mean. My tail light housings are so pitted that I don't know any chromer that would touch them. I am going to get the new midyear replacement pieces. There are people who redo pot metal parts but the replacements are better and cheeper in the long run. The judges might take a small deduction (1 or 2 pts), maybe.

      Hi Scott:

Much of the decision depends on how bad the pitting is therefore how much metal must be removed to remove the pitting. There is no such animal , in my experience, as good quality cheap chrome, you can have one or the other. The quality of chrome applied by todays show chrome platers will exceed that of the General at his best. There are platers around that will replate pot metal but , as I said, it isn't cheap.

On Monday a friend and I took approximately 20 parts to a chrome shop, 62 hubcap spinners, latches, window pillar chrome, all from the same 62, all these pieces fit into an orange box except a grille bar, $ 1,000.00 in three weeks. Cheap ? What is a restored 62 bringing these days ? Some of the reproduced items are of acceptable quality, some aren't, a good plater will invariably do a better chroming job than either GM or a reproduction manufacturer can afford to do.
