    Rebuilt 66 427 smoking, HELP!!!!

We put my freshly rebuilt 66 427/425 back in the car last week and fired it up (after some electrical issues, some may remember). When we fired the car up it smoked like crazy from the driver's side, white smoke. We pulled the plugs; it blew a mist of water out of #1. Pulled the head and #1 and #5 pistons were clean as they could be. There is no apparent damage to the head or gasket. The head has been repaired in the #5 chamber. It had a hole in it. Some shop in Atlanta fixed it and you cannot tell. Any ideas?

Second problem: when we pulled the driver's valve cover off 6 of the rockers had not gotten oil. Seems like the driver's side is not getting enough oil. Mike Hanson suggested it might be the cam bearing. Any other ideas? Now, I am going to pull the engine and send it back to the builder. Thanks for all your thoughts. Bill#44207

Anyone sick enough of their 06 Z06 to trade yet?....didn't think so

You may have a ring that is not seated or not installed properly, the bad think is you will need to pull the motor to find out any of this.

    Good luck.

We thought of that but it is blowing antifreeze out the exhaust. The smoke is white. The engine is getting pulled. I guess we will check the rings again too. Thanks Bill

I know what you are going through...I had this happen, the way I fixed (in my case) it was to tear it down and re-esemblem it, and the problem went away.

        Good luck.

        Regards,

Sounds like a leak to the water jackets. When new guides are installed and the head casting quality has deteroiated and don't seal good. This is common on old big block heads. So much so GM sells a sealant to fix the problem. You pour this stuff in the water run the car and it fills the minute openings. It is an organic stuff and works great. Engine shop by me keeps it in stock for this very problem.

have the heads pressure tested for water passage leaks before you pull the engine, any good auto machine shop can do this.

              Clem,

Any thoughts on Bills oil problem to the left side rocker arms? I can't remember exactly how this goes but isn't there a potential problem if a 67 and later style rear cam brng is used with a 65-66 grooved cam? Or could it just be that the rear cam brng is improperly installed, partially covering the oil hole?

How about the other way around, late cam/early bearing?

                Bill

I had the same problem with my 65 396. The engine was pushing antifreeze out of number 7 sparkplug on a freshly rebuilt engine. My stomach sank to my knees. The problem turned out to a leek between the intake port on number 7 and the water port on the head / manifold. The space between water port and #7 intake was rough and corroded. The fix was to install new gaskets and put plenty of sealant around the intake port and water port.

                Good Luck
