Re: rusted vin tag
There was a vendor supplying midyear tags, but I do not know of anyone doing C-3 tags. Rivets are available from time to time on ebay. I would take your tag off, repair the w/s post, reinstall the remains of your tag with the proper rivets and epoxy to hold the tag onDick Whittington- Top

wouldn't hurt to let the local authorities inspect
the situation and provide a letter of authorization of some sort before removal and replacment of the vin tag. This may minimize some hassle if this ever becomes an issue with an DMV inspector.
good luck,

Re: rusted vin tag
Don't change your vin tag! The car will no longer be eligable for judging. NCRS will not judge it. . It does not matter how much documentation you have. I went through this recently with Roy Sinor. When asked why NCRS would not judge a repro vin tag he said "we are trying to prevent auto theft" It made no sense to me-but that is the decision.- Top

Repro VIN tag vs State Issued VIN tag
Ken, if NCRS will judge a car with a state-issued VIN tag, then why not the repro? The repro you don't just run down to the LAPS and pick one in your year. The few places that make them will only do so with lots of state-issued paperwork, then when you get it, it is attached under state supervision.
I believe one place says they will NOT send the VIN plate to you, but rather the law enforcement who will oversee the attachment.
That means a repro VIN plate is essentially state-issued, except they are not state-manufactured.- Top

Re: Repro VIN tag vs State Issued VIN tag
I have a car that when I got it had a state issued foil vin tag. The owner of my car had procured a repro vin tag. I took the body off of my car, had a police officer ( an NCRS corvette nut) come by and inspect the numbers and photograph it. He brought the head of auto theft from Miami-dade county to inspect the confidential numbers and the engine pad. He then wrote a 10 page report on the car and made a conference call to the head of the Division of Motor Vehicles for teh State of Florida and a local Tallahassee judge to ask it it is ok to install my new vin tag. They all agreed and sent me change of numbers form for my title to change it back to it's original vin tag. I thought all was well until I spoke to Roy Sinor, told him the story and he told me that the NCRS was trying to prevent auto theft and that is why they will not judge the car. I did not ralize that was the resposiblity of NCRS. Roy further told me " you should have left the foil tag on the car and then we wouldjudge it. Now I am screwed. I surrendered the foil tag to the state of florida so I cannot get that back. I recently finished a resto on a 56 that lost its vin tag years ago. I bought a repro from the guy in texas-he charged me a fee to file it with the state of Texas so it must not be a crime to reproduce these there but it unacceptable in our organisation. I have been a member since the meet in Flint in 76 or 77. my membership number is 1020. I do not disagree with most of the NCRS policies but I think this one needs to be adressed. I am not trying to make a big block out of a small block or change my car to a more desireable color. I did a frame off resto on this car - some of you know me and my work. I just hate to have it treated as a red-headed step child because I put a repro part on it.
With no disrespect to Roy or NCRS,
Ken Edmunds- Top

Re: Repro VIN tag vs State Issued VIN tag
To the naked eye it is exactly the same, however they are not judged by the naked eye, rather with a very powerful magifier so as to find the anomally in the D in one of the characters that all original tags have. The point is, NCRS WILL NOT even considering judging the car with a repo tag. The first thing done in judging is inspect the trim and vin tag and if BOTH are not original, the car is bounced. No chance for judging.- Top

Re: Repro VIN tag vs State Issued VIN tag
What I would do, but maybe not the best.
1. I would have my copy of the TM&JG saying that state-issued VIN tags are permitted.
2. I would have copies of all the state-issued paperwork that was required to put this tag on your car.
3. I would stand on the grounds that this is a state-issued tag. You didn't just put a tag on it, the state did by all the paperwork and inspects they did.
4. I wouldn't mention a thing about the tag until they detect it as non-original. Then I would use #1, #2, and #3. Of course, now that everyone knows you did that with the tag, your only course is to sell the car. (And then buy it back, of course.)- Top

Re: rusted vin tag
Inquire with A G. Backeast (www.datatags.com) for a reproduction. They quoted me $170.00 for this service, $150.00 for the VIN tag and $20.00 for 2 rivets. You have to provide a pencil rubbing of your tag as well as proof of ownership. I haven't tried them yet, but I plan to soon. My car will not be judged, I'm just restoring the windshield and frame area on a '68 convertible. The work displayed on their web site appears to be very high quality. Give them a call.- Top
