rear differential & suspension mounting cross memb

HI, once again I am leaning on to the excelent knowledge of the members of this board.

Do I perceive correctly that in order to replace the rusted rear differential and suspension mounting crossmember, that I have to remove the rear spring and the rear cover plate of the differential too. Body is on car.
    65 BB convertable.

Thanks for your kindness and information,

    Jack Steele, Bubba school graduate?

Those items are attached to the crossmember so they need to go. I would remove the differential as a package and leave the cover attached to the differential housing. You'll want the room under there in case you need to possibly pry the crossmember off of the frame mounts. While there, replace all the rubber mountings on the springs etc.

It's not mandatory to remove the spring, just makes the job easier with less weight and bulk to deal with.

Leave the cover attached to the diff. housing though.

Have plenty of PB Blaster or some other liquid wrench type spray handy.

        Good luck

          Jack-
I would recommend a fairly large two jaw puller to remove the bushings. Back the bolt out 3/4 of the way - put the puller onto the lips of the crossmember with the puller screw on the bolt head. Pull a slow strain on the unit and wait. This usually pops 'em right off - no potential damage or softening of the rubber mounts (if by chance you want to re-use them) and much less prying and swearing. And the original mounting bolt is your safety - doesn't come crashing down or fall off the jack. I have also used a three jaw with success but you need just the right size to span the unit.

If the weld nut inside the "sombrero" on the frame breaks loose that the center bolt is threaded into from the force of the puller, you have to lift the body to repair it
