    Cylinder case machining question

I have a concern about the judging of the cylinder case of my 67 350 horsepower engine.

One of the cylinders on the driver's side of my 67 350 HP engine requires a sleeve because of damage due to a burnt piston. The installation of the sleeve will require that the surface that mates to the head be machined.

The rebuilder would like to also machine the side with the engine stamping so both sides match. The mill can be stopped before it gets to the numbers but the new machine marks will show on a portion of the stamp pad. What affect would this have on the judging of the cylinder case? This is the first time the engine has even had the valve covers off.

    Thank you,

    Randy

      Don't touch the pad side!

Typicallly the deck height varies side to side averaging about five thou. If you measure the deck clearance on each side before the block is disassembled you will know the variance.

With the SHP pistons and nominal deck height, the deck clearance should be exactly .025", but it it usually greater. Most I have seen recently are a little higher on the LH side, which is good for your situation.

Avoid any machining on the RH side. As Roy said, if the guy won't play ball get your stuff out of there and find a shop that will. You're much better off with the LH deck a little shorter and the right hand side untouched.

How much does he want to cut off the side with the sleeve? I would think it could be done with a five thou cut.

a good shop can trim the top of the sleeve with a cylinder boring bar. leaving a few .000 above the block will not cause any problems

Is there any warp on the pad side? I had my 63 340hp rebuilt by a local "speed shop" They do great engines but not into restoring. I had to really hold my ground on keeping them from decking the block. They didn't deck. I'm happy and the engine never ran better. Eric

I agree with Clem. I've replaced several cyl's and never decked the block. Never had a problem with any. I wouldn't do it for a competition engine but there's no reason it can't be done on a street motor.
