    C-2 Differential casting date location

On my '67 I know where to find the assembly date and gear ratio code on the differential assembly but where is the casting date? I think I found one on the rear differential cover but since it is a seperate part from the gear housing, it would seem to me there should be another date on the gear housing itself. Thanks for the help. Steve

    Steve-----

The casting date for the case is usually located on the driver side just above the strut arm bracket mounting surface. Some cases do not have a casting date, though. I don't know why.

Driver side, below output yoke, just above....

the strut rod bracket (1/2"). Hard to see if the bracket is still bolted on and you're looking from underneath.

Re: Driver side, below output yoke, just above....

Hey, thanks for the info guys. I went right out to the garage and jacked the car up to look. After getting two flashlights pointed at it from different directions and contorting myself on the creeper I could see F 16 6 which translates to June 16,1966. Is that correct? That works for my car with an assembly date of Sept. 2, 1966. The bad part is that the cover is J 30 7 which is Oct. 30,1967. Is that correct? That is after the car was built. It appears the differential cover had broken under hard acceleration ( surprise!) with the inner half shaft u-joints releasing and the shafts doing some slight damage to the jack compartment area of the underbody. I had seen this repair on my initial inspection when purchasing the car. It had been painted over with black paint where none should be. Who would be a good vendor for a properly date coded rear cover? What would I expect to pay for this part ballpark? Thanks Steve

C2 covers 3871375 did not have dates

So you've got one from 1977. Your pumpkin date sounds right for an early '67, given the summer vacation.

Re: C2 covers 3871375 did not have dates

So the cover is 1977 not 1967 because no dates were on the cover part no.3871375. How many years was this part used and what are the chances of finding one used? Would a reproduction part be detectable?

              Still some un-dated out there

I don't think anybody is reproducing them (excepting the heavy duty ones that are easily detectable). Casting dates on these covers "probably" began around '68 or '69.

There's another thing (and maybe Joe Lucia can help me on this). Around 1976 or 77 the spring width changed, and therefore the 4 mounting holes on the bottom had a different spacing. I don't know whether they changed the cover casting # at this time.

You can find them on Ebay frequently. They go for 50-150.00 from what I've seen.

                Cheers,

I've seen the date on the cover of '65 and '66 Corvettes, but not on '67's for some reason. My '66 has a date of H285 (8-28-65) and is original. I have not seen a date on the cover of any '67 I've owned, though. There is not a date on the cover of my low mile '67.
