Picture #2. Clearer, but moving a little too slow.

I would have gone faster, but there is too much traffic around here. No open roads anymore. Darn.

Ticket? For what, a rock concert? Car show? Around here, the second picture is normal go-to-work commuter traffic speeds on the Turnpike to Orlando.

The first picture would have been passing a slow car.

The time of 0.70 overdrives and more have made these speeds the norm, not the unusual, for most drivers. Great suspensions, tons of sound deadening, and so on have people thinking nothing at all about driving along at 80 and up in traffic.

Running down to Orlando for the Old Town meet in my truck with the old standard Turbo 400 and a 3.73 rear left me around 70-75 and feeling like I was hauling, while everyone passed me like nothing. I was just a moving chicane at 70.

It is mindblowing when you think that about 12 years ago, I'd run down the turnpike with the radar detector volume on full, eyes going everywhere, and running in full-up defensive mode using other cars to hide behind until I passed them, just to run 65. Today, I cruise at 75-80 and never bother to even think about a cop. Actually, at that speed, they ignore you and usually pass you.

Roy, wait until you get that new Corvette. You'll find yourself cruising at 100 more often than you would ever think.

                  Dennis,

For that one, I think I'd need a photographer in the right seat. These aren't the easiest pictures to take.

I kept wondering what people were thinking as I passed 'em. Picture a guy doing near 100, camera in hand, leaning back, with flash going off. Must have been something along the lines of "what an idiot".

                        YUP! Still Performs!

You know, as long as you can do this >>safely!!, this captures the moment - the very essence - of driving an old Vette. Sure there are Hondas doing this every day. But this is different; this is EXCITING! Here we have a 50 year-old motoring icon that is probably hand-built by the owner. And this icon is clearly talking to him RIGHT NOW!

Even at this advanced age, here's a car that can still get it up and still keep up with the young guns.

Sounds like what a lot of us are feeling right about now.

                        Thanks, Dave!

                        Pete

Just don't try that in South Carolina on say I-95 North or South. I got pulled over recently and the guy sez to me "Boy, did you know you wuz doin 75"? I said "No $h*t Sherlock, I was getting out of the way of a guy behind me doing 85". He must have liked my ride or just wanted to run my plate because the "State of South Carolina" decided to just issue a warning and a ya'll come back now.
