The wire broke loose from the capacitor and I have soldered it back to the capacitor. Measured the capacitance of the capacitor and it reads .477 micro farads. I believe this to be a .3 micro farads capacitor. Will this be a problem?
The coil caps were generally spec'd at 0.3 uF but with a reasonably 'sloppy' tolerance (perhaps 25%). Still, at 477 mic's, that's a LONG way from 300!
I wouldn't sweat the difference, but I'd double check your meter as it's hard to 'grow' capacity that wasn't there originally! You'll find most of these 'hush up' caps run in the 0.2 to 0.5 mic range because they were designed to shunt AM based RF components, the AM frequency band is a fixed entity, and the car's wiring harness ground impedance profile is reasonably constant. Soooo, there's just not that much difference in the value of the cap you need to create a 'correct' low pass filter....
But, if you'll sleep better with a fresh/new part, I think you'll find Long Island still has a healthy inventory of these mid-year coil caps with their unique integral 'one legged' mounting bracket.
Simply, a Farad is a unit of electrical capacitance which is equivalent to 1 coulomb of charge stored up across plates to create one volt of potential across these plates. Farads are rather large quantities so microfarads or nanofarads are more reasonable sizes.
Somehow, I don't think this will help you understant everything in paragraph 2 but maybe it will help someone understand more of paragraph 1.
