    Sealing repairs to body

I have just finished the repairs to my 64 vintage racer. it was crashed at the BRIC pileup in July. Needless to say there are several areas with new glass or repairs to old glass. What do you experts recommend to put onto the repaired areas to seal them, to minimize show through, before we prime or paint the car. It will be painted in single stage polyurethane paint. Jerry

    Re: Sealing repairs to body

I would put heat lamps on the repairs and shrink them as much as possible and let the car sit for a couple months. Then I would paint it. Depending on the type of repairs and how picky you are, you might want to gell coat it. I don't consider myself an expert. Even the experts will have different opinions. Take it to a painter that will stand behind his work and that has other happy customers. Take care, Terry

        Re:Looking for spray product

I'm looking for an impervious sealer to spray on to seal the body before painting. Something like a urethane sealer, but I'd like opinions form those who have painted as to what is best to use.

My vote is for Gel Coat, I just sprayed some last night.

On my 68, which I have taken down to the black glass, there was an primer, kind of yellowish in color, that was under the paint, above the grey then brown primer, this stuff was light, and ultra smooth, it covered some repairs to where I had NO idea these spots were there. For instance, where a fender had been removed and re bonded, there were repairs to the bonding seam using
epoxy and matt, I absolutely could not tell until I had removed all this coating, what ever it was? I would also think Gel Coat over the repaired areas as long as it is prepped correctly would be undetectable once painted.

            Good Luck

            Steve
