    65 Center Console Plating/restore

I am missing the 2 front tabs for my 65 center console. I would greatly appreciate it if anybody could give me the dimensions, hole location and size of hole. I can make these tabs at work on our metalworker but need the tab dimensions. Are they flat or is there a bend in them. Also, where the driver side tab was, the (rivet) broke out leaving a hole in console about an 1/8" wide. I also have a 1/2" hairline crack about halfway up the driver's side. I read from the archives about some platers in Houson,Tx. that will plate these consoles. So, I called Speed and Sport Chrome Plating and they claim that Nabors restorations hires them. Price could be in the $250.00. OR, has anyone had a good look at the Imported repo. center console. I would rather do my original. If it wasn't for this 1/8" hole I would try to just polish her up and leave it, but someday I hope to get the car judged. Thanks for your time. DG

    Re: 65 Center Console Plating/restore

    Doug,
Having just replaced mine I had mine handy so without a picture ...here goes!

As you can see there is a little notch in the underside of the console that the tabs fit into ..its about an inch and a half wide{inside measurement}. the tabs fits loosely into that notch, both side to side and to the back, so your first measurement is 1.5 .inches.

Next the tab is a little over 2 inches long with a bend upwards at about 1 and 1/4 inches ,leaving a 3/4 inch tab to catch your pannels. There is a "u" bend in this 3/4 part, I suppose for snugness reasons but I cant see why a little more than a 90 degree bend wouldn't accomplish the same result !

As to the hole dimention ,I cant tell you as the rivet is preened over it ,but I susspect its about the same size as the hole in your console is !

I could take and email you a picture if you would like somtime Friday.

Hope this helps and makes sense!
    JIm

      Dick,
If you don't choose to fabricate, you can purchase the tabs from LIC. They are part number 15-33. Description: Radio side panel support clips (2) at $10 a pair.

I will say in advance that I found it extremely difficult to install the radio side panels with the clips in place. Had to repaint one panel twice because I scratched it while trying to get it installed. I would seriously consider leaving the clip off the console.

      Regards,
      Gene

I too wondered how necessary the missing clips were. These parts of my 65 were already disassembled when I bought the car. Thanks for your information. Much appreciated. Dick Gutman
