    C1 door sill wood spacers?

Can anyone shed some light on these items? Why were they installed under the sill plates? Are they necessary? When I removed the old original sill plates last week for replacement, there were no wood spacers underneath. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I am replacing the carpet this weekend. Thanks.

Mark, can you live without them, yes. If you want to do it right you should use them. They add support to the gap between the carpet and the sill plate and help avoid the dimples you may get around the screw holes. Overall more support for a critical area. By the way, you can easily make you own. Let me know if you need dimensions.

Add it! If you don't like the look of the sill plate looking concave where the screws hold it down . Also helps clearance for the carpet tuck in. That is the reason it's tapered .

If you ever stand on the sill plate for some reason...you will wish they were installed....

I just added the wood spacers when installing my new sill plates a few weeks ago on my 56. I had to remove some wood by sanding etc to be able to fit things properly. My drivers side sill area had likely been repaired in the past. Hope yours are not as hard to install as mine. By the way I used repoduction spacers.

while installing the new sill plates, consider adding some material to prevent air infiltration under the sill plates. I discovered significant infiltration (dust etc) coming under the sill plates. A little bit of effort there will help.

Garry and all, Thanks for the responses. I was planning on going to Home Depot tonight and seeing if they have anything close in poplar or white/red oak that might work. Garry, if you could offer the dimensions, that would be a great help. Thanks.

Mark, I will need to get to you tonight when I get home unless someone else is able to provide them to you earlier. I will check the boards when I get home and if you don't have them by then I will send them to you.

Mark, my car has been apart for a while and after looking I believe that my sill spacers are repro's and or homemade as you are proposing to do. I know that mine work just fine so here goes:

Both the driver and passenger length are 27 inches long. The end nearest the door jamb measures
1 3/8" wide and tapers to the other end nearest the door hinge to 1" wide. As I look at the closely, they are shaped to follow the contour of the inside edge of the door sill.

The thickness (top surface to bottom surface) is 1/4". Once you have these cut you can then align your holes and drill 1/4" to 3/8" holes. There should be five holes total.

Mine appear to be made from 1/4" plywood and stained black. I hope this helps.

                      Here's my 55 originals...

They have a quick thin coat of black paint, probably semi-gloss, NOT shiny. Oak, not plywood, 1/4" thick, 27 1/4" long, 1 3/8" wide, with 5 3/8" holes for the screws. These prevent you from crushing the sill plate when stepped on.
