    Dull glossy jambs.

My 66 has BB/CC paint. Have anyone tried "No sand" or "liquid sandpaper" ? By reading labels sounds like it would take off high C/C on my jambs.
I tried ooo steel wool. nogood. Leaves scuff marks. Thanks, Don

The best method is to shoot the clear a mat clear when you are doing the clear coat...if you want a temporary fix...hair spray will dullen it.. The Clears come in different glosses...all the way to a matte finish. That is the most authentic method to use.

You mean BC/CC? It depends on the color. Yellow is very forgiving. I've had good luck with "No.7" heavy duty rubbing compound. It's red and has heavy abrasives. Try a hidden spot with a damp sponge first, worked for me. PT

Aren't the power window conduits supposed to be gloss black?

Re: Dull Lacquer Jambs - Why?

Yes I know the Judges want dull door jambs. MY problem has always been that when painting with lacquer the result comes out shiny all by itself, sure it can be made better with buffer. Why is there such an effort by Judges to have the jambs dull?

Thanks Michael, you are correct, but that is going to look like hell, gloss black conduits with light colored yellow doors? Oh well, I'm only doing this once. I have to get this car done before the '67 5th edition of the Judging Manual comes out and everything changes again. PT

                    Mike,
What edition are we up to with the 66 JG ?
On page 15 3rd eddition, under POWER WINDOWS,OPTION A31, it states "gloss black" !
I have seen your post too many times to doubt you though ! Could it be the difference between 66 and 67?

                      PT,

if you wish, I'm helping reassemble a 66 in the same color with PWs. The yellow and black doesn't look bad at all, especially with this car's black interior. If you want a pic of it, let me know.

Good tip on the #7. I think we'll use that on this car.

                        Patrick,

Great information, thanks! I assume that you work the rubbing compound into the wet sponge, and then rub the surface to dull it? Is this done with a "light" touch and worked until you get the desired results?

                        Thanks,

If the JG says gloss black, it's incorrect; the conduits were dip-primed with all the other miscellaneous bracketry, and should appear semi-gloss.

                            Mike,

I read it a second time just to make sure, and it says Gloss!
I will add this to the list of inaccurate statements and submit to the powers that be, when I am done with my restoration.

I guess I will rub mine with some #7 too .LOL

                            Thanks ,Jim

                              Jim,

The black on these parts may LEAN slightly towards gloss because they were dipped instead of sprayed but it's definitely not full blown gloss. Guessing, I would give it about a 60% gloss factor. I have to guess that most that have been restored over the years have been done in gloss. Actually, there were very few parts of a Corvette that were coated in gloss black, other than interior components. Almost everything was coated in something that had a target of roughly 50% gloss. Most of the vendors that supplied parts, such as these P/Window conduits, had a choice in coatings, as long as it met the GM print specifications. They could either use GM supplied paint or obtain it from local jobbers. Most prefered to use local suppliers so the actual gloss factor could, and did, vary slightly. However, the semi gloss usually fell within about 40% to 60%.
