Yes my 66 was a Canadian car. The Malibu SS with a small block was not made by G.M. in the U.S. in 66.

Richard, Sounds likea nice ride. As you know they only made 79 cars with that 3:08. Sold my 58 Dual Quad Vette 'n74 for $1500.00 another shrewd move on my part. The Best, Jay

Mine was a 68 SS 396/350 hp El Camino, 4sp bench seat. Bought it from the original owner when I got out of the Army in '71. It was pewter with black interior. Hated that color, so painted it 69 Corvette fathom green. Two years later I bought my 69 Corvette, guess what color! Finally sold the El Camino in 76 when the second kid came along. Hated to do it because I loved that car. Sure wish I still had it. Still have the Vette though.

              Joe,
Nice pics. I have a question regarding your 68 Chevelle. The stripe or trim piece going from front to back at door handle level. Is it 1. a factory option 2. paint or trim moulding?

The reason I ask is, I have what looks to be the same thing on my 68 SS ragtop and I was never sure if was factory or add on. Most 68's have nothing there. 68 is still a good year. When you were sitting on that fender I had a 68 L 78 Nova. What a screamer, wow. Thanks

                Jerry------

It was not an option (I never would have ordered it, but I did like it). However, that's the way the car was delivered. It was not added by me. It was a painted stripe and it was definitely not a tape sort of thing. It might even have been 2 very thin painted stripes that were very close together. Somehow, I seem to recall that it was this configuration, but it doesn't show up well enough in the pictures to say, for sure.

I had 2 friends that also had 68 Chevelle SS's that purchased theirs just before me. One of the cars was silver with an L-78. The other was the turquoise color with a black vinyl top and L-34. As I recall, both of these had the stripe, but I'm thinking that it may have been black rather than white.

Joe; I had a 69 SS396 that was Medium blue with the two very thin white stipes the same as you describe. If I recall corectly it was a 350 or 375hp with 4 speed and 3.36 twelve bolt., mileage wasnt great but a lot of fun to drive.(wish I kept it!). Sold it in 1984 or so because of the fuel prices and the valve guides were shot causing oil burn of 1 qt. every 1000 miles. John
PS it had 4 bolt main bearings.

                    Jerry,
I remember that a lot of the SS's had those stripes, so I'm sure they were factory. In 69 they had a wider stripe, but I don't know if the pinstripes were still used or not. My 68 SS 396 El Camino did not have the pin stripes, but I liked them so when I repainted it, I put them on. The dark green cars had light, almost lime green stripes. Great contrast. When I repainted my fathom green 69 in 80, I had a couple of pinstripes put on the fenders in the lime green. Nearly everyone uses gold on the fathom green, or other dark greens, but I think the light green really sets it off. Time for another paint job, and I'll to the same thing.

-------1968 also had an optional stripe that consisted of two vinyl stipes that went from the back (about bumper height) forward along the lower body crease and then up and over the front header bar and back to the other end of the rear bumper. You see quite a few 68s today with this optional striping but few cars came with them back in 68. The optional striping deleted the upper pinstriping. Its also possible that the upper pinstriping that was on Joes car was part of another deluxe option of some sort.........Bill S
