61 axle info

Where can I get information on the proper identification of and axle lengths for posi units for C1 vettes, in particular my 61. I have gotten info in the past of the lengths being RH 30 3/16, LH 28 7/16. The axles I have measure RH 29 3/4, LH 28 7/16. measured from inside the wheel flange to end of axle. Also what is the end of the axle flange supposed to look like, hollowed, solid. If someone can point me to a resource or manual that will clarify, it would be greatly appreciated.

Parts Book Group 5.420 shows '61 posi axle Right 30 3/16 O.L., Left 28 7/16. Axles are measured outside length, meaning from end to end including the stud flange. Posi axles should have yellow paint on the shafts. '59 to '62 used a .1 inch shim with roller bearing .9 inch thick. Roller bearing have single o-ring, whereas ball bearings have two o-rings.

The P&A parts book is an item to keep an eye out for on eBay - the one for the Corvette is "P&A 30B".

There were many different left and right axle lengths released between open and Posi rear ends during the C1 years, but they were consolidated in the early 60's for service of all applications to the two mentioned above by Gary.
