Firewall clips on Early 65 ?? Pictures?

Early 65 350 HP car: According to the AM and JG my firewall harness clips should all be secured with rivets. WELLL, my firewall clips are held in place with the same type of philips head screw. Futhermore, the outer 2 clips are a larger type than the 2 inner clips. What I mean is, on each side of the firewall, there are 2 clips. The outer clip is larger than the inner. The inner smaller clips seem too small to hold the harness or is the harness only held by the 2 outer clips?? Pictures Anyone?? Plus what should be secured by the clip above the wiper motor; harness, catch cable, speedo, washer hose? Thanks Dick Gutman

Re: Firewall clips on Early 65 ?? Pictures?

I looked at a video I took of a later 65 than mine taken at Bloomington 3 years ago. It looks like the inner clips are of a smaller type only holding the catch cable. Any opinions on this? How about the screws? This other 65 had rivets holding up the harness clip, unlike mine. I am referring to the harnesses which runs along the inner skirts. My clips here are attached by a bonding adhesive, the same color as the bonding adhesive used on my bonding strips. Thanks DG

      Here's what I have (early 014xx and late 235xx)

Both my cars are St.Louis bodies. Looking at the '65 AIM, it seems there are 3 clips holding the hood release cable only. These are at the centerline of the car and eqi-distant to each side (ie. the LH one is about above where the ballast resistor should be. They have very sharp corners and are smaller (ie. not as long) as the wiring harness clips, which have rounded corners.

The electrical harness firewall clips appear to be 5 in total; one each on each side of the front clip, about 1 foot forward from the corner of the hood opening at the wiper grilles. (according to the TM & JG, these may be bonded rather than riveted in A-body cars. Then there's another above the RH hood latch, and another above the master cylinder, and the 5th is about 45 degrees above the clutch rod and to the center of the car. Stangely, the early car does not have this clip, nor any evidence of one. All clips are riveted in my case.

As my early car is a C60, and the late one is an L78, this means I have another 7 lower firewall clips to hold the +ve battery cable routing from the driver to passenger-side starter. These are long, have sharp edges, but are rubber-dipped. Most (but not all) have larger rivet heads with a center depression, although I don't believe they are pop-rivets. The battery cable clips on the late car are not (all) exactly in the same place as the early one, but there's 8 months of plant changes to account for.

Hope this has been of some help. I may be able to take some pics, but the angles are tough. This is a minor yet complex subject, especially as it concerns C60 and L78 original cars.

Wayne: Thanks for the reply. Did you happen to note what the clip above the wiper motor supports. At this time I will not change out the philip-head screws for rivets as it may be correct for this car. How does one handle these unique differences on the judging field when the JG and the AM say different?? Thanks Dick Gutman

          Dick,
On my March '65-AO Smith convertible, all clips are secured to the firewall with phillips head (intergal washer) sheet metal screws.

The small, non-rubber dipped clips hold the hood release cable and the larger, rubber dipped clips hold the wiring harness. The clip above the wiper motor secures the hood release cable.

In addition, the wiring harness is secured to the hood release cable in five places with large, black, plastic wire ties.

          Hope this information is helpful.

          Regards,
          Gene

Thanks Guys: 40 year old cars that were mostly taken apart some time before I got the car lead to many questions. Thanks for your time. Dick Gutman
