    Seat Tracks

Have disassembled the seat tracks on my 63. What type of grease should be used when putting the tracks back into the round frames? Concerned about leaking and staining the carpet.

White Never-seize by Loctite is thick as paste and won't melt, even temps in 150 deg range. lubricates very well also. mike

      Hi Rick

I believe you use just a light coating of White Lithium Grease. It's the same grease used in the door mechanical units, etc. You can buy it at auto parts stores.

I figured white lithium would work. What came out was very dark, like old chassis lube. I have a mint set of 64's as well with the original grease intact and it is dark in color. Main concern is that it works for the next 50 years or so, taking the seats apart again is NOT about to happen without very good cause. Thanks for your help. Also will look at Mike's suggestion, sounds like a useful item to have on the shelf.

          Rick,

When I restored my '64 seat frames, I used the white lithium grease in the spray can. The spray lube makes it easy to lube the slides on the inside of the tubes. Seats slide back and forth like dream!!!

          Regards,

Looks like white lithium is what I will use. I actually have the seat frames completely apart, so I can get inside the tube with a brush. Thanks for your help.

                Rick------

I think you'll be ok with white lithium grease. However, as you've observed, it's not what was originally used. It's also not what I'd use. Why? White lithium grease is, basically, a light duty-type lubricant. I think that seat tracks benefit from a more heavy duty lubricant with "powerful" EP additives. That's why I think such a lubricant was used in the first place. So, I'd use GM #12377985 chassis lubricant. This is truly an all-purpose grease. You can use it for just about everything on the car except wheel bearings. It's actually even approved for Corvette rear wheel bearings, but I wouldn't use it for that application.

However, I'll accede that this is a very small point and I think you'll do just fine with white lithium.

Thanks for the suggestions. Ultimately, the seats will be set all the way back - I'm 6'3". they will only be moved for cleaning, so either white lube or chassis grease will work fine.

Joe...is right on, The seat adjusters I have seen restored from Paragon have a heavy (red) grease.
