C2: Does this hole have a bottom?

The stud at the upper L.H. side of the water pump where also the brackets for the alternator and AIR pump is fastened, has broken! Apparently it was tightened without a washer. Could it be that the stud made contact with the bottom of the hole in engine block? Or does the hole enter the water channel in engine block?

What is the best method to get the residual part of stud out of the block?

I think the p/n of the stud is 3877646. Where can I buy it?

My car is a 1966 with 327/300 and AIR + AC

    Hans-----

The waterpump bolt hole (upper, driver's side) does NOT go through to the water jacket. It is a "blind-tapped" bolt. As such, it's probably not rusted in place which will "somewhat ease" removal. If any of the bolt remnant protrudes from the block, I'd try to see if you can weld an extension on it so you can grab it and turn it out with a wrench or vice-grip pliears. If there is no protruding remnant, you will probably have to drill it out or drill and tap the bolt for a LEFT HAND THREAD screw. Install the screw all the way in (make sure it's a short screw) and turn the bolt remnant out.

The stud is GM-discontinued but all of the reproduction sources like Dr. Rebuild have it.

i've had luck with left hand drill bits. cneterpunch the remnants of the stud/bolt then try the left hand bits. squirt a little Kroil or WD40 at the stud before drilling. good luck, mike

About 18 years ago I was assisting my brother with the rebuild of a 327. A water pump bolt broke during removal. Drilled a hole in the broken bolt and used an easy out to remove it. Wrong thing to do, ended up breaking the easy out. The engine was out of the car so it was easy to take it to a machine shop and a electrical discharge machine corrected our screw up. The machine shop man also told my brother that if he should of brought it to him before we attemped to remove it.
