    65 Vette, spare tire area.

    Hi once again,

I have some questions reguarding the spare tire tub and lock/key

1.. I have two keys that fit the spare tire lock. One is round head and plated silver, and longer then the other. the second key is round head, shorter then the first by almost 1/4 inch on the lock area and is brass.
    Question which one is correct.

2.. The bolts that hold the spare tire tub/container , are they pointed or not. the judging manual just mentions only that they are 1/2 inch heads with integral washers, it doesn't mention whether they are pointed or not.

3.. The stamped date on the upper tub is what sized letters. Mine are scrubbed off so that I cannot make out any detail. And how far before the car was assembled were the tubs dated.

Thankyou for all your help. This board is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

    '65 spare tire lock key

    Jack,

The spare tire lock key should be the same key that works your glove compartment lock. This key is often called the B11 key, which is the Curtis key number (although your original key was made by Briggs & Stratton and should have the B&S address and name on one side) and it is sometimes called the round or pear shaped key as opposed to the octagonal ignition/door key. All of these keys were nickel plated brass originally, but with 40 years of wear, the nickel can be worn off and the brass can become exposed. If your brass key is new and not worn, then it is not original.
