    Re: I live in Florida,too

Mark..here in Wash. State I have the original plates from my '64. I always wondered if I used those plates (I think the cost here is $35) would it look funny or be confusing to people because in those days our plates were stamped with the year issued then used stickers for renewal. My '64 was sold in Nov '63. Hence the plates are stamped '63. So the average Joe would think I'm trying to imply the car is a '63. I have the same dilemma with my '63 sold in Sept '62. Any thots about this???

I always thought in Washington State it is tougher to do just about anything, but I guess when it comes to old license plates, it's not. All I did was bring in an old plate (happened to be from my Grandma's garage), paid the one time fee, and they registered it to my car.

Frank, on your 63 plate, you're probably right that most people won't understand how that plate was issued. Only license plate collectors will recognize that it is correct. They didn't issue new style plates until late 1965. Your only option is to explain it to people. I have an article regarding Washington State Plates that shows pictures of the '63 plate and explains their use. I'd be happy to send you a copy if you want it.

Re: Will this work in Florida?

I cant believe NYS finally has something simpler than the rest of the free world! They directed me to a web site to down load the form, then sign an affidavit attesting that the plates are original not repro's, send 3 photos of the plates (2 plates required) and a $3.00, yeah, thats three dollar payment along with the papers and within 1 month I got the new registration allowing me to install the black and yellow 1960 plates on my 1960. If memory serves me they allowed me to make the payment over the phone with my credit card and fax all the documents to the Albany NY office. Oh yeah the plates must be issued in the same year as the car. Couldn't have been simpler, an boy do I get a lot of questions abouth this at the local cruise nights! BTW I got the plates from the guy I bought the car from. He never got around to finishing the car.

You guys get off real cheap

Here in Ontario, Canada. Our gubment just loves stickin' it to us. They have the nerve to demand $239.35 for the privilege to place a YOM plate on our cars. No thanks, I registered my normal plates and have been driving with my YOM plates for over a year without anybody noticing.

            it's just a plate

If you like the look of the plates you have, then use them. I think the old plates look interesting and they're a LOT cheaper than a vanity plate. It's also a good conversation starter - nobody believes you can legally drive around with 35 year old plates.

I don't think they accept restored plates

When I started this process, the DMV had a list of the correct color plates for each model year (about a year ago) that would only allow the 71/72 for the 1971 model year. The plate vendor said that actually either one should be correct as the plates were assigned by CALENDAR year at the time of the sale, so a 71 model car could have been sold in 1970 or 1971 (or even 1972 if the dealer hung onto it, but we won't go there! ). He also said that he had seen cars registered either way, but my thinking is that I don't want to buy a plate that is later useless to me because of a DMV loophole, so I just picked the one specified in the DMV documents.

I just received this from a Collector:

Thank you for your inquiry and YOU are in luck as if you look up AB1915 you
may find that a Bill is now pending to do exactly what you want and 69 is
the requested year to extend it to ect.
I have been gathering Petitions and actually just mailed over 70 of them to
the assemblymens office this week as the next hearing is scheduled for
                April the 3rd.
You could help your cause by sending a hand written note on WHY you want
                it to happen to :
                MICHAEL N. VILLINES (ASSEMBLYMAN)
                6245 N.FRESNO ST.
