C1: 040 stamp on piston tops

A while back I aquired a couple 519 283 cyl. cases as trading stock ('58 & '59 dates). One of these came as a bare block with pistons in a box. On top of the pistons is stamped "040".

Would this denote an oversized piston for a bored out cyl? Or???

That usually identifies a piston that's .040"-over standard bore size.
