C2 insulator for the green temp. sensenor wire

How do you get the fabric insulator/cover around the green wire leading to the brass temperature sending unit on the front of the engine??? I have disconnected the black plastic connector in the end of the green wire and have found the brass oontact is too large to go through the fabric insulator. And, the other end of the green wire disappears into the wiring loom that still has its original black tape wrapping (I don't want to disturb that....)

I guess I could take a sharp knife and split the fabric insulator open length-wise and then lay the green wire inside..... However, I know some sharp-eyed judge would catch that and ding me points....

    I have a '64 Roadster...... Thanks

The black covering is installed before the metal terminal is applied.

I had to cut wire and install a new female connector. If carful you can open the existing connector and reuse. Note the original connector is gold colored (on my 64 it was) and some replacement harnesses are silver. I have used www.riwire.com as a sorce for connectors and odd wire check them out. Any problems email me and I will try to help - also be careful when you go into wiriing harness to get rest of insultaion out.

--------The easy way is to track the temp wire back to where it goes into the harness and cut the wire there. Slide the protective cover on and then solder and shrink rap it or if you are real lazy just crimp-connect it and then use a bit of electrical tape or correct harness-wrap to blend the joint into the surrounding harness. Then you dont have to bother the clip. Hope this helps..........Bill S

I have done it by cutting the brass contact off, and sliding on the new insulator fabric. Use a very thin screwdriver to open the contact up, remove the wire and then re-attach the new end. You'll only lose about 1/2" of the wire length at most.

Yup; I agree. That's the best way to do it. Disturbing the connector, itself, may result in a "less-than-satisfactory" future connection. Doing as you suggest eliminates all that and results in an "invisible" connection.

As a matter of fact, these "green wires with connector already attached" are available to SERVICE the temp sender wire. So, if you are repairing an existing harness, the process is the same---splice in the new wire with connector and cover it with the shellac-coated, black fabric insulation.

Gary, If I remember correctly, I used a small, flat bladed screwdriver like the kind with a pocket clip to push down the tang of the brass terminal inside the plastic connector. The terminal will then come out with the wire attached and it then can be threaded thru the fabric insulator. I taped off the other end (harness end) of the insulator to where it joined the old insulator. Looks neat, thouugh probably not "NCRS Hunky-Dory". I know I didn't have to cut any wires to get this all done.

I was thinking the about the same approsch..... Possibly another option would be to cut the wire about 1" back from the brass connector, slide the insulation over and past the cut, re-splice the wires and cover them with plastic insulation, and then slide the insulation back over the cut. This might leave some un-cut wire exposed for a noisy judge to look at....
