    Engine parts questions?

I just stripped down my original 65 327/350HP engine. I was told this engine had been recently rebuilt when I bought the car 2 years ago. The car was not driveable, nor could I hear the engine run. OK, the camshaft is a GM24, stamped 152, also a cast number of F6. Eureka: It looks like new, but what is it? The pistons: I believe from the stampings on the top are 30 over. Numbers on piston are L2166N below this is 030. Underneath the top of the piston is AO 013-99(date?) Rods are all GM with very few numbers. Rods: GM 40 and other assorted numbers but all GM. The caps: GM on all but numbers 6001 on one cap and vary from one to another but all say GM. Any ideas what these parts are? The timing gear is a GM and like new with Nylon gears. The timing gear is in the garbage but maybe I could sell this rare timing gear on Ebay. Like on previous posts, how does one know he can trust a rod without knowing the history of it? My machinist/engine builder will see it in about a week. Thanks! Dick Gutman

Thanks Clem. What are new rods going for these days? I saw an earlier post from Duke mentioniong a group purchase from Crower, but never saw a price. Thanks Dick Gutman

        Re: Engine parts questions?

        The cam is a "correct" L-79, 327/350. The 350/350 (L-46 and L-82) is different.

The OE '65 rods are the early, weak type. If they are original, I would replace them. A couple of weeks ago in a similar discussion a picture of the early and late rods was posted, so you should be able to ID yours.

Scott Marzahl announced the rod program over on the CF, but he posts here. E-mail him.

There have been several recent threads on engine building and blueprinting OE engines for peak performance without going overboard with discussions of how to "manage" your CR which requires you to know all deck heights, and massaging the heads for maximum top end power.

        You should review them.

          Re: Engine parts questions?

i have not bought any aftermarket rods for over 10 years so what the going price is now i have no idea. the new chevy PM rods go for about $250 for 8 BUT you need the special "king bearings" inserts with the thicker wall to work with your small journal crank. you can get your rods magnafluxed, reconditioned and install new bolts but the cost will be up there and you still have used rods
