C1 C2 Water Pump Pulley Reenforcement Spacer

    Hi all,

I am having a bit of a problem with the fan pulley on my 1960. The fan pulley already sticks out slightly past being even with the generator and crank pulleys. When I use the reenforcement spacer behind the water pump pulley, the pulley looks about 1/8" too far out and I can noticeably see the bend in the fan belt between the two pulleys because of this. I don't want to throw a fan belt, but the car is supposed to have the spacer. I am using thin water pump gaskets, so I am not sure what the problem is.

Does anyone know why the water pump pulley would not be aligned with the others and what to do about it?

    Thanks,

    Bob

remove pump and then take cover off back. if you have a press, simply press the flange 1/8" closer to the main body of the pump on its shaft. careful not to exert too much pressure as the shaft/ propeller area is fragile. if uncomfortable using a press, take it to a machine shop. good luck, mike

do you have the spacer installed between the harmonic balancer inside the timing chain cover? If not, you'll get essentially the problem that you are describing.

mike: i got the impression he was referring to the thin(about 18 gauge) cup shaped spacer that was intended to go between the water pump and fan, not the 3/16" metal washer-like spacer that was utilized to accomidate the thickness of the front engine mount and should be installed on the crank snout before the balancer is installed. mike

          Mike--
That's exactly what he was talking about--before the thin spacer, the pump pulley mount was too far out, and adding the spacer compounded the problem, making it just about exactly as far out of line as it would be if he didn't have the spacer behind the balancer.
