New Exhaust. Custom or Catalog buy???

    Guys

I need a new exhaust system for my 1971 smallblock (4 speed). I have a price from a local (well recommended) shop for $575.00 for a 2.5 aluminized ( I assume) system with Magnaflow mufflers (my preference - I like it loud). This price, of course is a custom system but is installed.

I also noticed that I can buy from Corvette Central an exhaust system (2.5 aluminized with Magnaflows) for about $340.00 with shipping & no tax. This is the catalog system but does not include installation.

I am torn. How hard would it be to do it myself and save over $200.00?

    Any recommendations?

I've installed 2 systems myself, and it's not too hard if the car is on jackstands. It's FAR easier on my lift, though. If you have any access to a life, it's an easy job.

Like Patrick said, this is a relatively easy job. I did this on a 66 and all I had was jack stands. To me, the key was positioning everything in place, supported and then "play" with it until you get the alignment perfect. I had a helper who would be my gopher, holding this pipe, adjusting that angle, etc.

Patience is critical here and the realization that no pipes are clamped tight until you like the finished alignment.

I JUST installed an Allens Exhaust system this weekend on my '72. I too have a lift and start to finish it took me 5 hrs ... and I work slowly. It fits perfectly !!! As for sound, I went with there buffleless muffler system ... VERY happy.

Maybe he'll use his "life" to install that "buffleless" system.

                  What a thread for typos.
