    Bolt Question on a '69

On page 299 of the AIM, there is a rod, #3935689, that goes from the rear bumper through the body and is suppose to bolt to the captive nut in the crossmember. There's no reference to the bolt part number (the bolt holding it to the crossmember).

I'm missing both bolts for holding these rods to the crossmember and can't seem to find a "match" from my bolt collection. Any ides on the size/thread for this puppy?

    Thanks, Don

P.S. And I wonder why these rods are chrome? Seems like excessive cost since ya can't see 'em.

    Don-----

The bolt is a 7/16-14 thread size of 1-1/4" length. Typical finishes for this bolt were phospate or plain steel and a typical head mark was 3 radiating lines( SAE grade 5; GM 280M)without indication of manufacturer. This bolt is the same as the bolt shown in the AIM on the bumper end of the rod.

Also, the rods WERE NOT originally chrome plated. They were dip-painted semi-gloss black. Yours must have gotten chromed at the hands of some "customizer" along the way.

      Joe,

Thanks a bunch. I must have tried a dozen bolts and couldn't find a match. I'll be at the industrial supply house tomorrow, so this is good timing. And yea, I couldn't believe the General would have chromed those parts (I'll add them to my de-chrome list).
