67 core support comparisons and questions?

Ok, I recieved my Core support from Dewitts and compared it side by side by
the one that I took out of my 67 which appears to be original.

The one I took out seems to have more substantial spot welds and other welds in general.

Also, there appears to be spacers, in the upper channel of the original core support. These appear to be either hard plastic or possibly metal pieces that are like tubes that would keep the channel from crushing due to over tightening the bolts that go through the support?

Also, the cross braces that go across the the front opening, seem to be reversed? The ones on the original are opposite of the new core support. Again,
the welds on the original appear to be sloppier.

Also the new core support does not come with the square captured nuts at the bottom of the support to bolt to the front of the frame, anyone know where these can be gotten?

Anyone know if the spacers are supposed to be in the channels or did someone add these to my original sometime after production?

    Thanks,

    Steve

    Steve,

The large nuts for the support to frame attachment are available from Long Island (not cheap). If your original still has them, just unbend the metal edge that holds them in and reuse them on the new one. I don't remember my original support having the spacers you mentioned. Does your original support have the large hole in the top(about 1") for a/c?..whether it was installed or not.

      Hi Rob,

Not sure which "large hole" you mean?

My original does have the nuts, but I removed them last night and they
are a bit rounded on the corners and the bottom side is kind of rusty on
      each one.

I've ordered two from Chicago Corvette so we'll see what I wind up with?

The spacers are interesting since I'm not sure how they could have been added
after ? But the new one doesn't have these nor does my 68 Core Support?

      Thanks for the reply,

      Steve

-------Those spacers are what I would call "floating" spacers. They are metal tubes that are listed in Long Islands catalog in sec.25 as part no. 06B. If they appear to be part of your old support its probably because they have been "crushed" into position. Hope this helps..........Bill S

          Steve,

The hole is in the upper, right corner of the support. I believe it was only there on a/c cars in '66, but on all the big block supports in '67.

            They look identical to me...

I've closely checked both the new DeWitt's support and my original (bent) support side by side. I cannot detect any difference between the two. I used the square nuts from the old support and slipped them into the new support. Neither the new or old support has spacers. PT

There is a hole about 1" or so in diameter. My car is a BB, but no A/C.

                Patrick,

What year is your car? My 68 core support looks much more like the new Dewitts support I recieved. (no spacers and cleaner welds)

It's a '67 small block. I'm positive the old one is original. Don't '68's have many parts that were used on that year only? PT

                    Yes,

68s are "unique" so Dewitts doesn't even carry them.

The new one vs. my original 67 core support, are VERY similar,
but I wouldn't say "identical" the spacers are in my original support,
but perhaps are supposed to be added to the new one? The cross bar supports
are reversed and the sheet metal seems to be somewhat differant dimmensions in the way it lines up and is welded on the new one vs. the old one? Minor differances and perhaps there were varriances in the old ones, so it may not be a big deal? Don't know, but I think a "trained eye" could pick the new one out of a crowd of supports due to the differences I'm seeing?
