    C2 Fuel Pump Replacement

    I am replacing the fuel pump on my 66 L79. I have two questions before I start:
    1. I have Permatex Hi Tach gasket adhesive. Will this product work ok, or Is there better choice?

    2. The shop manual mentions the the push rod the fuel pump uses to operate. Is it a staight forward swap, or is there a technique neccessary to install the new fuel pump?
    Thanks,
    Frank

    Frank-----

    1) The product you have will work ok; not very much in the way of sealer is needed on these gaskets;

    2)----remove the old fuel pump

    ------rotate the engine so that the fuel pump pushrod is at its maximum "inward" position;

    ------remove the short 3/8" bolt on the front of the block. Install a longer bolt and screw it in hand tight to hold the pushrod in the "inward" position;

    ------install the new fuel pump;

    ------remove the bolt and reinstall the short bolt; use sealer on the bolt.

      Frank,
      If you have the original 66 L-79 fuel pump(6440083), you might want to hold on to it and rebuild it. They are getting pricey like everything else in this hobby. Originals had #40083 stamped in the flange and AC cast inthe top.

        If you install abolt to keep the pushrod "up" doesn't the bolt occupy the space where the pump arm must go? I typically use some heavy grease on the rod to make it "stick" in position temporarily while I install the pump.

          No it does not. The bolt will only keep the rod from sliding down when it is positoned as described.

            Steve,
            Joe & Jim are right about the bolt method. I used it until I saw a local mechanic stick the end of the push rod in a wad of gease to hold it in place. Lubed the cam and rod surface and held rod in place.

              Re: C2 40083 Fuel Pump Bottom

              Have my original 40083 pump and a replacement 40083 both off car now.
              One thing I've been concerned about it the bottom cover. The Shop Manual seem to show a domed cover with recess for single screw and some other pictures I've seen show the same.

              Both my pumps (1 original to car in 1967) have four screws, two on ears to outside of pump and two towards the center. The cover is not domed but somewhat flat with two large humps. All screws are in the flat area. I have pictures, but unable to post to site, will send them if somebody wants.

              Sorry for being unclear.

                Alan,

                This what the JG says: "The bottom section is stamped steel,cadmium dichromate and secured with four cadmium dichromate slotted pan-head screws with a tiny "S" headmark". Hope this helps. Pete

                  The procedure Joe described works great. I wish I knew about it the first time I replaced the fuel pump on my '66 L79.
