    Engine I.D.

I am the proud owner of a 72 vette. It was sold to me as a numbers match car as the vin and engine code on the stamping pad match. The block casting also matches. However, the date code is somewhat of a question (M84). I have had the engine looked at by an NCRS judge and he believed it was the original block. Anyway, I am currently rebuilding the engine. Are there any numbers or markings on the inside that would be good to document or make note of while I have it apart?

    Thank you for your help!

Dave, Where is this M84 date on your engine? The only dates i can think of that aren't easily seen are the head casting dates. The date is a Month/Day/Yr code. this is the same code that should date your cylinder case (right rear top of block across from casting number. This # can't be your M84 date! Also there are dates easily seen on your exhaust manifolds (inside, towards motor) , the water pump, Distributor band, fan clutch. All these part dates are seen better when off the car.

      Bob,

I have about a dozen of this type code on cylinder cases from 1969 to 1972. I am sure there are many more out there. No it is NOT a date. These cases, to my knowledge, do not have a date.

Best advise I can offer is to look around thoroughly - there may be a date hiding some place.

This engine, in fact, is one of the blocks that Terry has on file. He took pictures of it two years ago in Windsor, Canada, just across the river from Detroit.

Thank you for your continued help. Given the responces, I guess there is no other supporting information on the inside.

If your engine has not ever been detailed or apart. You may want to degrease it to see if there are inspection letters on your block before you rebuild it. For example: my 69 has HW on both sides of the block just under the exhaust manifolds in yellow crayon-HW being the correct suffix code for my engine. Anytime you can document with original pictures it is easier to put it back the way it left the factory. Just something you may have already known, Jon Herrick
