A vapor barrier is a must, especially if you are going to put a specialty finish on the slab, or any type of resilient or waterproof finish. Also waiting a while (4 to 6 months or a full season) is a good idea before applying the finish.
I've seen lots of expensive finishes just ruined by water vapor coming up from the ground through the slab.
