    A/C clutch install tool help

I have removed the nut and clutch drive from my a-6 compressor. I used a tool from auto zone and the tool they loaned me to reinstall the clutch drive is not the correct one. I have tried several different places to get the correct tool but nobody has it. So I am open to any and all suggestions. 71 SB.

Here's what clutch install tool looks like

    Chas

This is from Robinair A/C tool kit 10500, and is threaded shaft 10505 with bearing and nut. I have shown in only partly threaded onto the compressor shaft; it is the same diameter. I have already removed the drive pulley. The pic shows the shaft/clutch key lying on top. If you have access to 1966 Chev Chassis Overhaul Manual, there's good illustrations and text on pgs. 2 and 3 of Section 1. The installer shown here is Kent-Moore J-9480, before they created Robinair.

I have seen other tools advertised as good for removal AND install (eg. Robinair 10861) but the threaded end of the big long bolt is not internally threaded and I cannot fathom how this could be used to install the clutch.

Good luck in your tool search.

Tool(s) are available from Classic Tool Design, New Windsor, New York. Phone (845) 562-8700. Catalog available on-line at www.ctd4ac.com. Prices are very reasonable and service is good. I believe the part numbers that you are after are #99-454 for the clutch plate remover and #99-458 for the clutch plate installer. The tool kit for servicing the entire A-6 compressor and front seal is #22-1269, and includes the parts above.

      Hope this helps. Larry

Re: A/C clutch install tool help

I had the same problem with the install tools from the Zone when changing the clutch on one of 70 SS Chevelle convertibles. The clutch removal tool worked fine however the install tool recommeded by their book/computer is not correct for an A6 compressor. I have tried the all tools at 3 different Zones close to the house by getting an A6 compressor from their inventory and then looking at the istall tools to see if they will fit the A6. None do. We also checked the master store inventory and each store had all the install tools they were to stock per store guidlines. The Zone does not stock the proper install tool for an A6 compressor in their "Loan a Tool" program. They will special order and SELL you the correct tool.

Advanced Auto does not have the proper install tool either so forget that route. Short of buying or sponging one from a friend, you are out of luck at these 2 parts suppliers. There may be other auto parts suppliers with a Loan A Tool" program in your area. I did not try Pep Boys as they do not have a "Loan A Tool" program here in Nashville.

I ended up just buying a rebuilt A6 with the proper clutch, a new dryer, correct GM compressor sticker and called it quits. I did get a one year warranty on the above parts since I also purchased a new dryer and system filter at the same time.

I did purchased a rebuilt compressor from the Zone 10 years ago for my wife's 67 convertible witht the correct clutch, installed the correct sticker, kept her original compressor, turned in a junk core and called it good then also. The dates not right but she STILL has chilly wind!

Re: A/C clutch install tool help

Thanks, all. I am going to fabricate my own. I understand how hey work and figure it should not be too hard. NAPA has a combo tool for about $50.00 for the A-6. I would have to order it though and then be stuck with it. I am hoping its a once use tool only.
