    1971 LT-1 Number match

I have a 1971 LT-1. The problem is that the engine stamping is a overstrike. I am the fourth owner of this car, and it has been in the area its whole life. I have an original bill of sale, but I still feel a bit uncomfortable with the engine stamp job. I have had the engine stamp looked at, but know one seems to know the signifigance of it. Does anyone know of any other way to determine whether the engine is the original or replacement? I have been told there is another set of numbers somewhere on the bottom end, oil pan area. Is this true?

    Thanks a lot,

    Aaron

Ordinarily there is only the numbers on the stamp pad. There is an alternate location (above the oil filter, vertically on the flange that the bell housing bolts to) as shown in the AIM, but it is NOT normally used.

There are "hidden" numbers stamped on the frame, but that has nothing to do with the engine. The person who told you about other numbers was likely mixing up the two situations.

You did not specify what part of the engine pad was overstamped. I had a 1973 L-48 auto convertible that had the last digit of the VIN derivative overstamped. The number was originally an '8', then it was overstamped with a '7'. The VIN derivative on the transmission had the very same overstamp.

There was an article in The Restorer many years ago about factory "mistakes" on stamped VINs, engine suffix codes, etc. I think the title was "And The Numbers Match". Very interesting article. I seem to recall that this article had an example of a factory overstamp as well.

Don't lose any sleep over it, it happened.

Just for my own personal curiosity, what part of your engine pad is overstamped?

        Aaron,

Overstamps on the pad are not all that rare. I have seen a pad that was triple stamped at the factory, and is genuine without question.

Al Grenning has a library of pad photos and rubbings, and can quote many cases of legitimate over stamp.
