    Vinyl repair........

I have a very small crack to the lower right of the glove box on my 1982; about 1/2: in length. Is there any way to fix this blemish?? Thanks in advance.

    Re: Vinyl repair........

    Paul,

Believe it or not I've used the vinyl and fabric repair kits as seen on TV and now available at most fabric or (some) upholstery shops. The repairs I've made haven't been in such an obvious area as yours, but I have had good results. The heating element I've used is a hand held "heat spatula" that I just happened to find long ago. I haven't looked to know where those would be available now though. TBarr #24014

I bought a vinyl repair kit at AutoZone that had the little heating spatula with it. Used it on the door panel of my Volvo and it worked out great. You cannot see where it was repaired. You have to mix the color you want from the colors supplied with the kit, or if you have vinyl spray you could use a light color and spray over the repair. You just have to be careful with that little spatula because it gets very hot.

While we are on the topic of vinyl repair...has anyone had any luck in repairing "dents' in vinyl? I found a nice 1969 upper dash pad at Carlisle for a great price because it had a quarter-size indentation on the top of it. My guess is that I will somehow need to shrink the vinyl over the dent because the substrate is apparently crushed. Anyone with any thoughts? thanks, geo...

              Just a wild guess.....

try using a hair drier over the spot, but you can't turn the dash pad over, else you will get new depressions.

                Re: Heres the results..............

I ended up buying 2 kits as I had a hard time MATCHING the color with these OLD eyes. You have to let the color DRY on a test area first to get the match. I used a small amount of the rubbery filler compound and then the rather thin overlay. LOOKS GREAT...ONLY I KNOW ITS THERE. We'll see how it holds up over the next few months.

I did a door panel dent (caused by a tungsten trouble light - now I use flourescent) by perforating the foam backing from the rear with a blunt old screwdriver till the tip touched the vinyl from the rear of the dent. I worked it around to get the vinyl to let go of the foam, then used a hairdryer to warm up the vinyl. Next, replace the screwdriver with a silicon caulk gun and pump out the dent. Alternatively, you might try pushing extra foam material into the hole instead of silicone. - Dave

Dave: sounds like a great idea. I will try it. I have the luxury of being able to experiment on the old one I'm replacing. It also ocurred to me to try to pump in some of that expanding household foam weather stripping but I fear it will turn my dent into a bump! I will post my results. Thanks again
