    Need speedometer driven gear

OK, the speedo driven gear in my 74 is bad (thanks to Joe Lucia for pointing me in the right direction).

The gear I took out is brown and has 19 teeth (unless I can't count properly).

The rear axle is 3:36 posi. Trans is a Muncie 4 speed (M20 I presume).

Is there a chart somewhere that identifies the gear, by color and / or number of teeth, for a given axle ratio?

Where is a good place to get these gears. Chevy dealer told me yesterday that they are not available from him.

I have a dealership that can still get them. I just got new gears for my 62. E-Mail me if you want me to order them for you. A parts book will tell you what color and how many teeth, but mine only goes up to 1968. Maybe Joe can jump in with some help with numbers.

Your Chevy dealer isn't trying very hard. He apparently only wants to sell you parts with a more significant profit. They are available--group 4, under transmissions. There's a chart in their parts book.

I got mine from Eckler's or corvette Central. My local Chey dealer is no help either. Tom

They found it once I gave them the part number. What do they do when the customer doesn't know the part number?

They also told me that they could not look it up by application (74 Vette, 454, 4 speed, 3:36 rear ratio), just by color and number of teeth.

I shouild take my old parts book down there and show them how to do things without a computer.

If you have an old parts book, just give the part number to the counter guy. He can run it and the result will come back either current, superceded, or discontinued.

There are no IPBs for pre-'75 models in the digital system, and you can't expect a counter guy to know how to find parts for a car that is older than he is.

You'll be doing both yourself and the counter guy a favor if you can provide a number from an old paper parts catalog.
