    C2 Birdcage parts

Suprise, I started to strip my 65 roadster and found the bottom drivers side rusted out. Does someone make replacement sections or know of anyone with pieces to repair?
    Thanks

In my book, the best way to solve a rusted out bird cage situation is through buying a clean, rust-free, used original and 'transplanting' just those section(s) you need to repair your original. The factory original weld dimensions of the individual sections are preserved by using a fully assembled bird cage from a donor car and the cost (parts ONLY!) will be reasonable.

Shop for a donor bird cage once you've FULLY inspected your existing one and you've determined exactly where good metal stops and rotted section(s) begin so you know what to negotiate for. There are Corvette 'bone yards' out there who, once a car is pretty well parted out, have little left except for the naked bird cage.

One such place is Corvelle Automotive in Denver (Keith Beyersdorf @ 303.777.2020) but there are others around the country. One nice thing about Keith is he goes to Bloomington and Carlisle and will haul a large item (frame, bird cage, Etc.) out to meet a customer and save him freight-$.

Doing Birdcage work of any kind is not for the faint of heart!

Where to start and where to stop is the question and no matter what you are replacing, it means pulling fiberglass off the car for access.

Trust me, once you start, you may not finish until you have replaced the entire birdcage!

Get the body repair guides from Glass Ra, and the 69 Stingray book from Rick Bizzoco is another good resource.

America's Finest Corvettes in Ramona has been a big help to me for parts.

      Good Luck,

      Steve

I'm well versed in Birdcage repair...nothing to brag about, let me tell you!
You basically remove all the fiberglass to do the job correctly. I believe Bairs still sells new, full length channel sections for under the doors (at least their website still shows them available.)

Either that or be creative with a LARGE metal brake.

the postings suggesting rust free original parts be used in my opinion is the way to go and splice those parts in . In my experience the A.I.M showed excellent views and spot weld locations , take a look and get educated . its work and usually under the car but the end result if done correctly will gratify . If not done correctly you will probably sell the car due to the foundation that you are aware of , and trust me if you ask large money the players will look .

Ron, call Caledonia Classic Cars at 888-245-5224. The are in Belding, MI. I do not think they have a WEB site but on page 19 of their catalog are all the components for the 63 to 67 birdcage. I've purchased parts from them in the past and have always been happy. Ask them for a catalog.
