    1962 front spindles

Took my car apart about 25 years ago,and am having trouble remembering a few things. Does anyone know if the part numbers on the spindle supports left and right are the same? I have one put back on and am not sure if it is correct. I don't want to go any further until I'm sure. After installed, do the part #s face the front or rear of the car? Thanks!!

1962 front L&R spindles are not the same...

...which is an incomplete answer. As I recall, if you install on the wrong side, the spindles will not be parallel to the ground. At least, that is one way of telling which way they go on and I'm sure you can do a test fit without fully installing them.

Thanks Dennis, I think the one I have on is correct. It looks parallel to the floor. If you think of any other tips please post them. This is a great site!!

Daniel - Think I Was Having Another Senior...

...moment. My "not parallel to the ground" story came from a friend that installed his spindles up-side-down on his '56. I guess it can be done, but the spindle angle was just short of being very funny looking. In summation, I do not know for sure if there is a difference in the left and right one. I trust one with superior knowledge will chime in. Best, Dennis

Not a senior moment. You remembered correctly. I had my suspension apart a few years ago for rebuilding. I had to take the spindles to a machine shop to get the lower outer bushings off and get the king pins out. When I went to put them back weeks later, I too forgot which one went on what side. When I put the first one on, it was wrong. It pointed at a very weird angle to the floor. Swap it for the other one, and it becomes obvious. Also the 2 grease fittings should be in the rear.

Left hand should have casting ending in 449--right ending in 550. Each spindle support has a cast in flat "stop" that is just above where the spindle mates to the support. That flat stop, which corresponds to a similar piece on the spindle, and limits travel fore and aft, should be to the back (rear) of the car.

Thank's Mike! You've got great credentials. I'm pretty sure I've got the answer to my question. Also thanks to Chris, but I have the grease fittings in the front on the rt side and in the back on the left...? Looks like I did it right on the first side so I'm going to go ahead and do the other.

...grease fittings to front on RH. Grease fittings to rear on LH. You can take that to the bank - well, a small bank... Best, Dennis
