Re: Restorers in new york
Corvettes and Performance installed a complete stainless brake system for me on my 66. I have purchased a few parts from them. They have also done an appraisal on the same car. I have been in their shop and have seen many Corvettes in various stages of restoration. I've had no complaints but i did not have a restoration done either.- Top

Re: Restorers in new york
Ken,
I too have dealt with Corvettes and Performance Center in Williamsville (they did a front differential seal and transmission rear seal job on my '65 back in the late eighties). Good work at a reasonable price. While picking up my car from them I spoke with the owner of a beautiful black '64 convertible that had just been restored there. He was extremely pleased with the workmanship, in particular, he had had his front end replaced, not with a one-piece, but with original style fenders etc and bonding strips. From what I saw it was first-class work as was the paint job.
Now for the "but": I also asked them to recommend someone to install new foam and Al Knoch leather seat covers on my seats, and was sent to "Bob's Tops" down the road. What I got back was pure butchery. Despite giving them all new covers, foam and an installation kit, Bob's complained that the covers were hard to fit (a pretty rare comment re: Al Knoch's products), and used STRING to connect the sewn-in wire to the springs, claiming that the hooks provided in the kit might "push through" the covers later. Probably the worst thing they did was to use a pop-riveter to rivet the rear lower edge of the cover to the seat frame!!! As well, the binding on the top edge of one of the seats shows from behind the seat back due to poor fit. Neither is the shape/contour of the seats correct. When I asked Larry Lewis (the owner of Corvettes and Performance) afterwards what their experience was with Bob's for upholstery work he said "70-30". I guess mine were in the latter category.
So my recommendation would read: body/chassis restoration they're fine; but run, don't walk, if there's any suggestion of Bob's Tops doing ANYTHING on your car!
Good luck!

BTW: My tales of occasional woes in restoring my car all date from my pre-NCRS days (mind you there weren't computers in everyone's home in the late eighties and therefore no Discussion Board either). The advice and information available here is priceless...!- Top

Re: Restorers in new york
Dennis,
I'd appreciate a recommendation (I assume you mean in western New York), although I'm pretty sure I'll have to replace at least the covers owing to the "rivet" holes caused by the Bubbas at Bob's. Otherwise, I'm thinking of having Al Knoch's own staff do it at Carlisle, which I attend frequently.
Thanks!
