    Smog hose reproduced availability C3?

In February someone posted regarding the hoses from diverter valve to check valve, left side,----GM #3932476 and right side---GM #3947740; both being production only items for 72 & 73. Today I checked with a catalog supplier who can supply the hose (2 pieces $40) but no longer makes them with the numbers. Is anyone aware of a supplier who is producing or has access to these 3 rib design hoses with stamped numbers on them?

    Charles------

I expect that you might not be able to find someone that is currently reproducing the hoses with the numbers on them. This gets into a somewhat "sensitive" area. The part numbers, with or without the "GM", are a General Motors trademark. Technically, when these numbers are applied to a piece that mimics the original part, it's a violation of trademark rights. So, the numbers and "GM" can be applied only with GM's permission (e.g. obtained through the so-called "GM Restoration Parts Program"). One could, however, use the same number for another part and, without inclusion of the "GM", it would be perfectly ok. No one can copyright or trademark a series of numbers by themselves. However, when those numbers are placed upon a part which mimics a part to which GM (or anyone else) has originally assigned that identification number, the "line is crossed".

While there might be problems for someone doing this on a commercial basis, YOU can apply these numbers to the part with no infringement or problems, at all. So, you simply obtain an appropriate stamp and stamp them yourself. You can obtain a set of these "make them yourself" rubber stamps. These have all the characters you need and you just arrange them in the gang holder. Then, stamp away. Or, for a little more, have permanent stamps made up that closely duplicate all the nuances of the original stamping. You can sell these to others after you've mnade up a lifetime supply of hoses for yourself. Obtain a white ink stamp pad such as is used and sold for the inspection stamp for Harrison aluminum radiators.

If you don't want to get involved in doing this yourself, there is a solution. Hire a bunch of "elves from der forest" to do it. These guys can be recruited from the "sweat shops" of "Brand X". Treat them right and they'll do a decent job for you. It saves getting all that ink on your hands.

      Shaking the trees for elves

You would think that with the volume of reproduction items that are more obvious than say a hose, (e.g. labels) and GM's reticent willingness to help Corvette enthusiasts that these would not be a problem. As I look back in my minds eye of all the other GM labeled hoses I have procured from restoration houses I wonder how this item becomes magically elusive especially in light of the fact that it was not a service part and unlike some options, every car had a smog pump.

With that said I had thought about doing just what you mentioned such as stamping an appropriate hose myself. The problem here is that you would need an original numbered hose as a guide for letter height, character and GM spacing, repetition etc. Now if I had that hose.....

You said "there is a solution. Hire a bunch of "elves from der forest" to do it. These guys can be recruited from the "sweat shops" of "Brand X". At least none that admitted it.

Did you get them from DR recently? When I called a few days ago they were not available with the part numbers. I have some black hose on there now so I am in no rush.
