    Leaf Springs 1962

I installed a new set of heavy duty rear springs when I restored my 62. Now the car sits so high the rebound straps will barely fit and there is almost no upward travel before the straps are tight. Should I get longer straps or return to the standard spring?

Rebound straps come in slightly different lengths depending on the application but I don't remember how much of a difference it is. Others on the list will know.

If your springs are heavy duty because they added a fifth leaf, maybe you can remove a leaf. The original standard springs only had four leaves anyway.

Your only other choices are to re-arch your current springs or replace them. I have original four leaf springs and the car rides and handles suprisingly well. Someone had added a fifth leaf at some time which I removed. That lowered the ride height slightly.

By installing a higher rate rear spring you have altered the roll stiffness distribution unless you installed the companion high rate front springs or increased the front anti-roll bar diameter. Thus, you have reduced the designed in understeer and possibly biased the handling toward oversteer. My suggestinon would be to return to the OEM rate, and rework the spring to restore the original ride height as outlined/recommended in previous posts.

Jim, I find it hard to believe that an extra leaf would do that much to the ride height. Did you, by chance, reverse the rear shackles so that they are now pointing down? When I had 4" I-Beams in the frontend of my 57 years ago, I reversed the shacles to give the rear a boost.
