    holley carb troubles

    To Anyone Who Can Help,

I've got a '66 L72 running its original 3247 carburetor that is giving me a problem when first started and on choke. I see fuel dumping into the primary side of the carb and can smell it running rich as a result. If I open the choke plate fully by hand while the carb is still on choke the excess fuel stops being dumped in. When the choke plate is released, however, the fuel begins dumping in again. It's coming from above the throttle plates but I cannot see exactly where it's originating from.

I've checked the fuel level(with the car running at idle speed) and it is just at the bottom edge of the sight plug hole. None spills out when the screw is removed so the float does not seem to be set too high. I'm running power valves of either 6.5 or 8.5 value (I'm not sure which since its been a while since the carb has been apart) with an idle vacuum of 18 inches at 900 rpm. I do not know what vacuum it is pulling while the engine is cold and on choke-I forgot to check. Once the engine is heated up and off choke, the excess fuel spillage stops altogether. Also, my secondary sight plug hole threads are on the verge of stripping out but still allow me to tighten the plug sufficiently to prevent fuel leakage. Is there a way to repair these threads on the bowl?

Any suggestions or assistance the members could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Joe

    Re: holley carb troubles

the choke pull off is set too rich, lean it out. also check to make sure the fast idle does not have the butterflies too far open. if you want to keep the orignal bowls the fix i used was to machine new plugs with longer theads and epoxy a theaded piece inside the float bowl to engage the longer threads.

Sorry, I hit the wrong button

          Joseph,

I was just thinking that your problem might be the floats, or too much fuel pressure. Could also be that your vents are blocked and that you have fuel siphoning into the body from the bowls. But follow Clem's advice.
