    C-3 Radio Issue

    I am driving my 73 more lately. Been having problems with my AM/FM/Stereo. Checked and replaced my radio fuse tonight as it was showing varying ohms resistance. Radio seems to come on as stereo light is lit when on FM. However volume very low. So low that I could not hear it with the engine running. Can someone give me some in car diagotics? Can antenna grounding strap need cleaning?

      you say its stereo? did it just do this all of a sudden? i repair radios so will be glad to help you out. FM will play with out hardly any antenna. am wont. the reason i said stereo is that it has 2 separate channels and separate speakers. so for both power transistors to go at the same time is pretty unlikely. so give me more details.

          As I didn't drive the car much until recently I can't much detail about its failure rate. I pretty much listened only to FM. Yes it is FM stereo I remember it was sounding kind of broken up until it quit. There is no audioble AM. FM can be heard but very weak. I did not check to see if only one speaker is playing. I drove it today to work. I'll check that out later today and post.

              An FM station can be heard if the volume is turned to max volume. When the balance control is turned fully both ways it seems that only the left side is working. Due to low volume its difficult to tell. Almost sounds like the volume is coming from a central location. however the balance test says to me that the right side has no sound. This test is using the accessory key position with engine not running. Something is happening as I caan see the ampmeter responding when a station is tuned in. Hope this helps.

                  ALLEN, HArD TO TELL WITHOUT BENCH TESTING IT. I HAVE SEEN MICE EAT THE SPEAKERS AND MAKE A NEST. WHY DONT YOU PULL OFf A KICK PANNEL AND TRY A DIFFERENT SPEAKER ON ONE SIDE AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS. WHERE ARE YOU LOCATED? IM NEAR SACRAMENTO CA. ID BE GLAD TO REPAIR IT FOR YOU. I THINK A 73 HAS ONLY A 2 PIECE RADIO IN IT, SO WOULD NEED BOTH PIECES. LET ME KNOW. sorry the cap ;ock was on...

                      I'll try the replacemnt speaker idea in a few days. I'm in Virginia so we are a about as far apart as we can be. Thanks for the help. Anyone else?

                          Distance is no real problem. You could ship it to Dick via UPS or, even, USPS Priority Mail. The radio head unit and adapter unit are not real heavy, so even Priority Mail would not be all that expensive. Maybe $20-25.

                              I can't offer a repair solution. However I can suggest a repair vendor that
                              you do not want to use under any circumstances. It is wonderbarman in Tn.
                              I used him and it cost me a extra $125 above his $350 initial fee, or he
                              wouldn't return my radio. Plus many e-mails that were totally abusive
                              and total lies...I originally asked for my radio to be returned since no
                              repairs were started after 30days waiting for some followup.
                              He cashed my check immediatelty and said the radio was his unless I paid up.
                              It gets worse. Stay away from his slick web-site, he knows all the angles.
                              He even joined NCRS, SUBMITTED a tech article last year, and is racking
                              in the dough with his line of B.S., WONDERBARMAN is a nightmare......
                              I really feel sorry for having to be negative in this great NCRS forum
                              however this vendor is sticking it to some of us....Big John
