I had a broken tach drive cable. Removed the cable and installed a speedo repair kit. So far it was easy, now i'm having a difficult time reinstalling the tach drive cable to the distributor. I don't want to turn the distributor and screw up the timing. If I keep at it I'm sure i'll get it eventually, but there must be a better way? Any suggestions?

Re: Tach cable install
Bob,
Did you replace the cable only or the sheath as well. If your sheath is fine and you can reuse it, the it should connect in the same manner as before. If all was well before timing-wise, I'd keep trying to get it in without upsetting the distributor. Do the connection at the tach last.

Re: Tach cable install
Bob, I've it a pain to re-install the cable into the distributor too! I just used the trial and error method till it finally went in. I suppose your could use a mirror to look and see the position of the distributor tack gear then try to get the cable end close to the same position. Patience worked for me. Good luck, BobBob- Top

Re: Tach cable install
Hi Bob
I just did mine and was having a hard time connecting it to the distributor. I had a friend hold the cable from inside the car and move it around to get it to seat while I screwed it on.It took alittle work but I got it on. With only a short part of the cable coming through the firewall,it makes it hard to do. But you can do it.
Good luck........John- Top

Re: Tach cable install
Remove ignition shield if applicable and dist. cap. This will allow better access. There should be a small adapter fitting that fits into the dist(at least my MSD on a 68 dose). It has a locating pin to key it to the dist driven gear. The square cable then fits into that than screws to the dist housing. The tac drive should be pointing towards the drivers side(or so). Be sure the small adapter fittings there and in the right way, look for the square hole. You may try spinning the cable so the square hole matches the square cable. Give it a jiggle while pushing. Dont force things the threads wont take it.- Top

Re: Tach cable install
Just to add the car is a 63, it does have the shielding in place,I am reusing the old sheath with a new cable installed in it. I think a little persistance will get it. When ever things get a little frustrating I find it is best to walk away and try it later. The alternative is to try and force something and regret it later.- Top
