    barrett jackson florida -54 vette

I thought that the board would be buzzing --talking about the bj auction but so far nothing. The big surprise to me was that a 54 blue vette that had just finished a frame off sold for 220k plus the 8 % commission
.It was nice but not perfect ---but 220 k --I wish!!!

Some one most think it's rare ! or don't know GM made a 53 also, or thinks a 55 is just a 54 that some one added a V8 in and screwed it up. Like you and I did .
A 55 cant be worth much then.

      Delmo's cars

Speaking of auctions, I was surprised that there was no further discussions about the Delmo Johnson racers in Arizona.

Here is what Sports Car Market magazine had to say (great magazine, by the way):

"Two disappointing no-sales came in the form of a pair of racing Corvettes-one a 1962 convertible and the other a 1963 coupe- and both with Sebring and SCCA provenance in the hands of Texas Chevy dealer Delmo Johnson. The '62 did well to get to 950K, but ultimately missed the mark by at least 150K, while the '63 fizzled out at 900K. For both cars, it seemed like a case of over-optimistic reserves, despite each car's impressive history."

They go one to describe each further in the individual listings. Of the '62 they said "The history here-both of the car's origins and it's racing endeavors-were not enough to raise the 1M reserve bid." And on the '63 they said "This was big money for a racer with only U.S. success. It's hard to imagine holding out for more, or getting it, for that matter."

Finally, there was a 1962 at the Gooding auction in Florida. Raced at LeMans by Tony Settember and Jack Turner. Sold for 489K and described as being in top condition.

I'm thinking about giving someone a real bargain for my blue 54. I might even forget the 8% and just settle for $220,000.I must admit, I am completely baffled by these prices.

The REAL question is how many of these cars change hands at that price.

Don, I spent all of Saturday afternoon at Barrett Jackson - Palm Beach but only watched the auction for short periods of time. As expected it was totally puzzling. Some cars brought unexpected prices that I can't imagine they will ever bring again and others sold for prices that seemed low. I enjoyed mostly going from one exhibition tent to another looking at some rare cars from all over the country. This event is a must see if you get the chance. Jim Weeks - Member #2978

I just a Pennant Blue 1954 yesterday. I'll sacrifice and sell it for 50% off the Barrett Jackson price. Cash only, please. It's a beauty!
