    Engine Pad -- protection

When painting the block and heads of an engine how did the factory not paint the pad where the (VIN) identifcation numbers are? What is the proper method for restoration and how can I prevent rusting of the pad once the engine is back from the shop. Is there a substance that can be applied and resist the heat? Thanks as always

    Re: Engine Pad -- protect

Pads that weren't painted (some early Corvette blocks DID have their pads painted and St. Louis stamped through the paint) were masked with tape. Don't understand "correct restoration" question. Leave the pad natural. Judges want to see the original broach marks, so don't sand blast, mill etc, unless machinest tells you this has to be done to achieve proper cylinder case top surface flatness. If this is the case, you've got some choices to make before going any further....

As far as "protecting" the pad, this really isn't necessary. NCRS judging rules allow (overlook) the presence of minor surface rust/scale on parts that were natural. Use of a toothbrush and gentle cleanser before show is A-OK. If you want to protect, a little oil or spray silicon from time to time works fine.
