I've heard that GM's silicone emulsion (p/n 10953014),which they recommend as a weatherstrip treatment, should not be used for that purpose. Nor should any other silicone product for that matter.
Has anybody else heard this, and if so, what product should be used?
Thanks - Doug
Doug
I use a little armor all on a rag and wipe it on every few month's. Mine look's like new with no problem's.I use it on my 69 and my 88. It work's for me. Tom
I have been using the GM silicone emuision for years on all my cars. New and old. I like it. If anyone has heard that it shouldn't be used I would like to know why. Mike
I used that product on scores of cars when I worked for GM. As well as preserving the rubber it prevents door rubbers from freezing to the door frame when people foolishly wash their cars at 0F.
My 1967 was painted a year ago with all new weatherstripping installed. I treated all the rubber with the GM emulsion. I too would like to know what the perceived or real problem is??
Mike, I can't recall the article, but they recommended a DuPont product called "Krytox" which was called a "fluorinated grease". Again the article went on to state how this was a better product than a silicone emulsion and they gave same reasons why you shouldn't use a silicone product. I wish I could be more specific but I just can't recall the internet site I saw the article at. BTW I think GM markets the Krytox product as a weatherstrip lubricant under p/n 3634770. For all I know it could just be another version of their silicone emulsion - p/n 10953014
I use 303 Aeorspace Protectant, it does not contain any silicone or petroleum. It leaves a nice finish and offers a UV protection. Us it on tires and they look new without that shine or brown residue. Get info at 303products.com
