    rear main bearing inspection

How can I tell if my rear main bearing is bad? I've read about what to look for...like irregular wear patterns, obvious scratches, etc...but the pictures I see in service manuals are not high quality. So now I'm looking at my bearing & I'm not sure if what I see is normal or excessive wear. What concerns me is I have a notch on the right side of the bearing (circled in red) & I also have a thin fine groove that extends from the notch and runs up to the other end of the bearing (pointed out with 3 arrows). Is this by design or is this worn out?

the notch is a locator tab that all main bearing have and the line you see is caused by some piece of debris that collected in the notch and go pulled around by the crank. bearing looks good to me from the picture

      Ditto

And when you put the cap back on the block, don't forget to put sealer on the butt ends of the main seal.

If the bearing halves still fit snug in the block and cap I would scuff them lightly with some Scotch Brite, put Torco Assembly Lube on them and put it back together. That bearing looks very good to me.
